  1. I really enjoyed the poetry unit. I thought that it was interesting because I have never written poetry before and I never knew how many different types of poetry there was. I thought the movie “louder than a Bomb” was emotional and it was interesting and insightful to see how many people can let out their emotions through poetry. It means a lot to some people which makes me appreciate poetry more. I did like listening to other people’s poetry more than writing my own because I liked to listen to what other people has to say and how they took the assignment in a different direction then me. It was cool to write about things in different shapes, rhythms, patterns and about different things. I liked this unit because I enjoyed doing different things in class every day. It is a lot better than doing the same thing over and over again and it was fun to switch it up and have a new assignment to do. It really got my inner genius out and running because I had so many things I wanted to say during some of the types of poems because they just fit so well with my genius. I think I like writing short stories and essays more. Writing poems is a lot more creative though because I was able to end sentences in random spots and I had different formats which made it fun and easy to read. I would really suggest keep doing the “louder than a hornet” because it was a good way to get us to participate and interact with out class mates during the quarter because I hadn’t really heard any of them talk before! It was also interesting to hear the stories that they had to share via poems because I would have never guessed some of the things my classmates chose to talk about. Overall, I really enjoyed it and I thought it was a great time!

  2. I enjoyed the poetry unit. It was interesting to learn about the different versions of poetry. Before this unit I thought poetry was mainly just rhyming and Iambic pentameter. The creative ways people express themselves through the poetry and different forms the writing takes is interesting. I had fun trying out the different options of writing and practicing them all. It was nice that we were free to write about whatever we wanted and were allowed to make it our own and express ourselves in a light and fun way or a serious way. I also liked the louder than a hornet. It was fun to hear people getting really into the poems and some people getting emotional. I also liked the movie “Louder than a bomb”, it was emotional and cool to see how important the poetry was to the students and helped them deal with the many issues and the feeling of being isolated from the others. It was an individual way of expressing themselves. The poetry was so important to them, but I didn’t like that the poems were scored. I thought that they should have only shared their poems, because the fact that they were competing against other people’s emotions and experiences and how well they expressed their ideas, is personal and should not be judged by others that aren’t in their position. I also liked the creative ways we could write the poems and create a picture out of the words that helped add to the idea of the poem. Overall, I enjoyed the unit and how many different ways there are to write poetry and how so many people express them through that form of art. I also liked the warm-ups during the unit, they were quick and fun and when we had to interpret it on our own it let us be creative.

  4. I did not like the poetry unit very much. I never really understood poetry and never got interested in it because I would rather have someone tell me their ideas in a straight forward way. I also don't like the emotions that go along with poetry. I don't really get emotional, I just try to keep it to myself. Don't get me wrong, I like to laugh and I laugh a lot, but I don't feel the need to show everyone I am happy by talking about it. Same goes with anger, I don't want to tell other people why I am angry and rant about why I am mad. I can see why some people like poetry because it shows creativeness and you can express your emotions, but I have no desire to do so in a poem. If I wanted someone to know something about me, I would tell them in a way that they could clearly understand it, leave no interpretation. I think in a "right or wrong" mind set or "black and white". There is too much hidden stuff in poetry that may or may not be intended, like a grey area. I also like to follow strict instructions and poetry allows too much room for my liking. Poetry has never appealed to me because I always try to find the correct meaning of each poem, which is impossible to do. That makes me angry because I like to know facts, not opinions. Some poems are very easy to understand, but some other poems I have no idea what they mean so they seem irrelevant to me which is a waist to me. I am yet to come across a poem which I really liked and wish I could read it again. Poetry is almost a language, a language that I don't understand and never will understand.

  5. i did not like the poetry unit just because im not very good at it although i do believe i improved a lot. It was nice to review all the poetry stuff i forgot about from earlier in high school. I think that poems are a great way to show peoples creative side so i am not surprised we had a poetry unit i personally just didn't enjoy it as much as others. Although i really did like the louder then a bomb movie and our version of it. I was really impressed by all those people in the competition and i thought some of the people in our class were great as well so overall i thought it was a decent unit just not really my forte.

  7. I ended up enjoying the poetry unit a lot. I didn't really take it as seriously as I wish I had though because it's hard for me to express myself, especially in front of an audience. It was actually really emotional seeing everyone's performances at the Louder Than A Hornet and I wish I had realized how meaningful poetry could be before the end of the unit. I feel like I let myself down a little bit because I didn't present something more expressive at Louder than a Hornet. I think it would have been a great way to release feelings inside by presenting something actually meaningful, so that other people can understand what I am going through. Seeing other people’s poems made me realize just how effective one can be in expressing emotion and passion through poetry. Even though I didn't do that myself it was still enlightening to experience other people’s emotions through there own poems. I guess that is probably the point of poetry, to express a feeling and make the reader feel it too. It reaffirmed what I had already believed about everybody having his or her own unique struggles in life. Although I enjoy the rhythm and pattern aspect of poetry, the part that I really enjoy is just getting to hear people's truths. Trying to fit ideas and emotions into certain patterns is definitely a tricky process that takes a lot of creative thinking. I also enjoyed the poetry unit because I was able to get some practice with a form of writing that I usually avoid. I have never been particularly drawn to poetry before this unit, but by now I have much more appreciation for the beauty of it because I have seen what it can bring out in people.

  8. I really enjoyed the poetry unit. Poetry has always been one of my favorite forms of writing because I feel it opens doors to freedom of expression more so than other forms of writing. There are patterns and different types of poems, but you can also write poems however you want and no one can tell you they are wrong. There aren't really any rules to poetry if you don't want to follow any. Because I love poetry I also really enjoyed learning about all the different forms of poetry we explored this unit. Some were more interesting than others, and some were easier than others, but I love poetry so personally I never ruled out any form as being too difficult or not one I liked before I tried it. I really enjoyed the six stanza/six line/six word poem assignment, that was one of the best poems I think I wrote this year, and they were my favorites to listen to, I think because they are designed to be audibly pleasing to an audience. I also liked the poem where we rearranged lines from a different source and made them into poems. That was just fun because the text was already written and we could decide on so many different ways to format it, each time coming up with a different way that meant something completely different. For all the forms, I enjoyed the challenge of creating poems that I liked and wanted to publish while still following the patterns we learned. However, like I said, I like that poetry doesn't need rules, and so I would say that my favorite part of this unit was the louder than a bomb final project. I felt really proud that I created a poem I was proud of, and was able to get up and speak in front of the class. Presenting my poetry, and publishing it, is definitely something I would continue to do in the future.

  9. I had mixed feelings about the poetry unit. It took a long time to create the correct feet for our poems because it was difficult to tell where the emphasis of a word fell. However, as the unit went on I got better at figuring out the emphasis which made it easier for me to write my poems. Even though creating a beat to the poem was difficult, once I finally accomplished it my poem sounded really cool and was easy to read.
I enjoyed the Louder Than a Hornet final assignment. I liked that we got to hear a lot of other people's poems in order to see what they had been working on all unit. I thought there were many really good poems and I was glad they were shared with the class. I also enjoyed that it was in a different setting than the normal classroom. I think this created the effect of allow kids to be more theatrical with their presentation because it felt more like a real poetry slam as opposed to a kid just standing up in the middle of a classroom and mumbling their poem.
If we were to do this unit again I wish we would've had more in class time to work on our poems because I felt like I was able to focus and write better while in class. I also found it helpful that our other classmates were there so you could bounce your ideas off of them and they could help you to think of words that rhymed with things. I also found that class tended to end just as I was starting to get the rhythm of the poem which made it difficult to come back to later at home because I was no longer in a good rhythm.
